北港農工農經科以生態環保概念，在校園4條水溝打造「自然生態水溝養魚滅蚊系統」，養殖蓋斑鬥魚等原生種魚類，滅蚊成效良好，周邊並種植台灣紅藜加以綠美化，讓臭水溝搖身一變成為校園亮點。

北港農工農場經營科大樓周邊水溝，原本缺乏整理，水質汙濁蚊蟲滋生，新任科主任陳景明與老師莊文進，利用暑假將水溝汙泥挖出，讓陽光曝曬1星期消毒後，開始打造「自然生態水溝養魚滅蚊系統」。

2人計畫養殖台灣原生種魚類來吃孑孓，學生得知，主動到附近池塘打撈10餘尾蓋斑鬥魚，還有人抓到台灣鯽魚，為避免大魚吃小魚，2種魚分開飼養，再配合各種水草，「滅蚊系統」大功告成。

陳景明表示，水溝設有溢水孔，豪大雨來襲時可確保魚隻不會外流；排水孔則可在需要時，讓水溝隔間的水互通，增加生物多樣性，2星期下來，「孑孓殺手」蓋斑鬥魚已吃掉不少孑孓，自然衍生的青蛙則負責吃蚊子，校園蚊子明顯減少。

陳景明說，水溝旁將種植台灣原生種紅藜，紅藜是台灣原住民族的傳統糧食作物，已有百年歷史，可製成紅藜飯、紅藜葉茶、紅藜酒，花穗艷麗，兼具美觀與實用。
