上半場英格蘭展現比哥斯大黎加更強的侵略性，共有10次具威脅性攻擊，並且射門4次，但是並沒有射正，哥斯大黎加雖掌握51％球權，但是侵略性不足，僅射門3次，有2次射正，踢完半場雙方仍處0比0僵局。

英格蘭本屆世界盃開高走低苦吞2連敗，是D組已確定淘汰的隊伍，反觀哥斯大黎加則是開低走高，已經取得晉級16強門票，使得這場比賽勝負並沒有那麼關鍵，不過哥斯大黎加若取得分組第1，將能在8強閃掉可能碰上的地主巴西，因此一般預料哥斯大黎加應仍會全力搶勝，英格蘭則是為尊嚴而戰，不想3連敗打道回府，兩隊是首度在世界盃交手。（蔡裕隆／綜合報導）
