美國記者佛里慘遭伊斯蘭遜尼派叛軍「伊斯蘭國」（IS）斬首後，美國媒體21日披露，IS早在下毒手前，就曾向佛里的雇主及其家人開口，要求多達1.32億美元（近台幣40億元）的贖金，但此事上報華府後遭斷然回絕。

佛里生前雇主、網路新聞公司《環球郵報》（GlobalPost）執行長巴柏尼20日也稱，IS徒眾本月13日曾以電子郵件向佛里的家人預告將處決他，巴柏尼隨即將電郵轉交美國當局，「我國政府知道這件事，這樣講不會錯」。

《紐約時報》訪談佛里家人代表與曾和佛里一起遭IS囚禁，但後來獲釋的人質，以及斡旋救人的中間者後報導，IS放人的條件除了贖金，還有「換俘」，諸如美方須釋放關押於德州的巴基斯坦籍恐怖犯嫌、神經科學家阿菲雅．希迪克（Aafia Siddiqui），而據《環球郵報》報導，單單要放佛里，IS就開口1.32億美元。

紐時說，IS雖與國際恐怖組織「基地」分道揚鑣，但綁人索贖手段如出一轍，法國與西班牙是給錢了事，美、英則向來拒絕花錢妥協。據稱，美方若不從，IS將殺害其監禁的另外3名美國人，包括自由投稿記者索特羅夫與一位姓名不詳的救濟人員。

如何不讓IS再砍美國人質腦袋？美國總統歐巴馬似乎無計可施。他20日譴責IS殘暴之餘，呼籲中東國家通力合作，摘除IS這顆「毒瘤」，以免它繼續擴散。

美軍20日也繼續空襲伊拉克北部摩蘇爾大壩附近的IS部眾、車輛與軍武。美軍中央指揮部宣布，佛里遭害後，美軍在伊北立刻執行了14次空襲任務

美國國防部應國務院之請，另考慮增派300名兵員前往伊拉克首都巴格達，加強保護美國外交使節的安全。
