隨著貧富差距擴大，民眾的度假方式有天壤之別。富豪要求愈來愈多的服務，但一般民眾卻想盡辦法省錢，高級和平價旅館也設法滿足截然不同的需求。

俄羅斯、大陸、巴西和中東富豪，花2萬美元在豪華酒店住一晚毫不在乎，旅館也對他們有求必應。

而著名的平價旅館也為省錢的中間所得度假者，提供免費無線上網和早餐，但沒提行李和住房服務員，也沒餐廳。

許多人還想更省錢，上網尋找私人出租的房間或公寓，甚至只要有沙發過夜。自安排這種服務的airbnb網站，在2008年成立以來，在世界各地登記的臨時客居激增至55萬個。
