即使田中將大拿下洋基隊最多、美聯第二的8勝，防禦率2.06也是美聯第一，但這位過去日職樂天金鷹隊的天王投手，仍不覺得自己是洋基王牌。

今年球季開打前，洋基隊捧上大把鈔票，挖角田中將大。日美兩國球迷都在猜，田中會不會跟達比修有一樣猛、或只是下一個井川慶？

球季打了兩個月，質疑的聲音幾乎沒有，只聽見一向挑剔的紐約客，一次又一次為田中的好投喝采。他是史上第4位「進入6月前、拿到8勝」的新秀。

田中拿勝投，靠的不只是強運，還有實力，暫居防禦率王，就是最好的證明，而且78又2/3局送出88K，田中去年在日本的時候，也沒有這麼會「K」人。

「這大概是因為，美國打者之前沒有對戰過我吧！」田中說。

雖然田中自認不是王牌，但他的威力，不容對手小覷。田中拿下第8勝的這場比賽，對手雙城的強打Joe Mauer，第一次上場，清爽的三球三振，第二次再碰頭，田中也只用4球，再送Mauer一K。

「球員們說，球在眼前消失了，」雙城教頭Ron Gardenhire說，「他的指叉球，實在厲害到誇張的地步，而且每種球路他都會。我們也觀察到，他有時甚至會吼自己，充滿鬥志。」
