十八名越南人，花錢坐車到大陸福建平潭，再集資購買木殼船深夜出海，打算偷渡到台灣打工，海巡署據報，出動多個海巡隊加強巡查，台中海巡隊昨天晚間八點多，在苗栗外海查獲這艘木殼船，當時船身已經進水，如果沒有被查獲，恐怕沈船葬身海底，十八人今天下午被移送地檢署，再移送移民署南投收容中心收容。

越南日前發生排華事件，台商工廠遭殃，不過，台灣在越南人眼中，仍然是打工賺錢的好地方，十八名越南男女，每人集資一千三百美金，坐車到福建平潭，再購買一艘破舊的木殼船，五號深夜九點多，從平潭出發，要偷渡到台灣打工賺錢，新竹一名漁民出海作業，發現這艘船很可疑，沒有漁具，但是小小的船，卻擠了許多人，回港後向海巡通報，海巡署加強桃園、新竹、苗栗、台中海域的巡查，台中海巡隊隊長陳保成說，六號晚間八點多，台中海巡隊在苗栗外海發現這艘木殼船，一點五坪船艙擠了八個人，其他人分別坐在甲板跟駕駛艙內。因為嘔吐，船上飄散臭味，而且海巡隊員發現時，這艘船已經進水。

在木殼船上，有泡麵、罐頭跟飲水，偷渡客坦承，是要到台灣打工賺錢，雖然當時查獲地點離岸上已經不遠，不過，木殼船進水岌岌可危，為了避免意外，海巡隊將十八人送上巡防艇，帶回偵訊。如果沒有被發現，萬一沈船，十八人可能葬身海底沒人知道。而這些偷渡客不知危險，只擔心遣送回越南之後，還要被罰相當台幣十二萬元的罰金。
