Samsung Electronics on July 14 unveiled the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, a 7-inch Android 4.4-based 4G-enabled tablet, for launch in the Taiwan market at a contract-free retail price of below NT$10,000 (US$334) in late July, according to Samsung Taiwan.
Seeing Taiwan recently started offering 4G LTE services, Samsung expects its 4G-related products to enjoy strong demand. The company has cooperated with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), Taiwan Mobile and Taiwan Star Telecom to sell its Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and 10.5 with services, and the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 will also become available through the telecom channel.
In addition to the 4G-ready model, Samsung is also offering a 3G model priced below NT$9,000.
Tablet demand in Taiwan rose strongly from 400,000 units in 2011 to 1.2 million units in 2013, but demand from January-May 2014 dropped about 6% compared to the same period in 2013, according to Andy Tu, general manager of Samsung Taiwan's mobile and communication business, who added that the drop was due to market saturation and the fact that consumers have delayed their purchases to wait and see on the development of 4G LTE services.
With the full release of its tablet models, Samsung is optimistic about its shipments and sales value in 2014, and expects to become the largest tablet vendor in Taiwan.
